Every mother knows the immense benefits of painting for children. Kids love applying watercolor or gouache to paper, especially when the paints are unique and vibrant. This magical activity enhances their touch and eye coordination, actively develops fine motor skills, fosters creative thinking, improves attention, and even boosts coordination.
To make the most of your child’s time, introduce them to the artistic process from an early age. And remember, it’s crucial to provide them with the "right" paints.
Why Watercolour?
Watercolour is often considered the most challenging technique, but it’s actually a great starting point for children. It doesn’t allow for mistakes: once a stroke is made, it stays. This teaches children to adapt, find alternative solutions if something doesn’t go as planned, and change their course of action. Unlike gouache, oil paints, or even simple pencils, where you can erase or cover with another layer, watercolour requires you to continue working with what’s there. Additionally, watercolour often produces unexpected effects, which can be surprising and delightful. Children absolutely love this.
Finding Your Child’s Preference
What your child starts drawing with depends on their preferences. Some may prefer pencils or colouring books, while others might be more inclined toward paints. My both three and six-year-old kids adore watercolour and don't even reach for coloured pencils despite my offering. The process of using gouache or watercolour — moving the brush, dipping it in paint, then water, and transferring it to paper — is so fascinating and in the same time calming to them!
The Joy of Drawing
It’s beneficial to draw lines, circles, squares, landscapes, and analyze them by color. Coloring books help understand volume, light and shadow, colors, and color combinations. Therefore, both independent drawing and coloring are valuable in their own ways.
Engage Your Child on a Gloomy Day with Creative Painting!
Are you wondering how to keep your child entertained on a gloomy day while also contributing to their development? Painting with watercolors is an excellent and enjoyable activity for kids.
